Lieutenant Howard Griffin began to stir a little as Ada tapped him on the cheek. Michael spared a thought for the rest of his crew as his co-pilot began to wake up. Pete was dead, entombed in his ball turret beneath the Doll, but the rest of the men were most likely alive. It wouldn’t be a comfortable life for them in the prisoner-of-war camps in Germany, but they’d make it home someday. It would be up to Michael and people like the courageous Norwegian patriots helping them escape to make sure that day came sooner rather than later.

“How are you feeling, buddy?” Michael asked as Griffin opened his eyes.

“Better,” he lied.

Ada held up his head and held a cup of water to his lips. He dribbled some into his mouth and swallowed it down. Changing his clothes was almost as difficult as hiding from the Germans the night before, but between them, Karl, Ada, and Michael managed to get his torn, bloody clothes off and replace them with a clean sweater and pants that had once belonged to her late husband.

“We look just like locals now,” Michael told his friend.

“Just as long as no one talks to us,” Griffin responded through gritted teeth.

It wasn’t difficult to discern how much pain the man was in, but he didn’t complain. Ada had already given him the few painkillers she had, but Michael knew it had done little more than take the edge off the agony his friend was suffering. They had to press on, regardless. It was that or succumb to the German patrols that were coming for them.

Griffin’s skin was only slightly darker than the snow outside, but his bandages weren’t coated in crimson as they had been before Ada administered the new ones to him. It appeared that she had done what was needed for now.

“You ready for this, Howard?” Michael asked him.

Griffin answered him with a pained grin. “Yeah, I like it here, but all things considered, I’d rather be in Philadelphia.”

Michael laughed. “We’ll try and get you back there soon. We’ll get you a cheesesteak or something. Can you sit up?”

“Yeah, I’ll give it a shot.”

He grimaced in pain as he did it, but he was able to sit up with Michael’s help. “I’m afraid we’re going to have to move soon, Buddy. We have to get out of here. The Germans are going to come back.”

Griffin’s eyes focused. “When are we leaving?”

“No time like the present.”

Griffin didn’t protest; he just agreed with a gentle nod of his head. “I suppose it’d be all a little pointless if the Krauts caught us here.”

“And our friends would be in serious trouble.”

“We can’t have that.”

He tried to shift his legs around to stand up, but couldn’t.

“Take it easy, pal. Don’t try to run before you can walk. Karl’s outside making a stretcher for you, and we’re going to carry you.”

“You’re not so bad, you know that?” he said with a watery smile. “Now, how about some of that breakfast
